The highlight of the past week must surely have been the annual Grey Nedbank Music Festival in the Sand du Plessis theatre. There was a wonderful synergy present this year and I must applaud the contributions of the guest artists Charlize Bergh, the group ‘Adam’ and Old-Grey Frank Freeman and the members of his band. Their professionalism and the way they interacted with both the staff members and Grey boys ensured the success of this year’s music festival. The music festival reached its climax on Saturday evening and it was breathtaking and a fantastic sight to experience the Grey College “gees” and electric atmosphere present in the theatre. The theme of this year’s music festival was the fourth dimension and although I am not an expert on this scientific term and concept the Grey College boys certainly created their own “Grey dimension” with their performance during the past weekend. Time and space were certainly transformed by performance of the Grey boys, in particular, but also all of the artists on stage. To see the mass choir of Grey boys during the latter part of the show, was, once again, awe inspiring and the echoes of “Viva la Grey” will linger in the memory of the audience for a very long time.

It is sad when certain individuals within the Grey community prefer not to celebrate all the successes at the school but to rather criticise and throw the proverbial mud. There is, for example, never enough boys supporting a particular event, boys are not greeting any more and lack discipline or the “gees” is simply not good enough. These type of comments are often unfounded and based on a particular individual’s perception at a given time. This kind of approach and negative mindset has unfortunately become part of and is symptomatic of modern society. We live in a time of entitlement where people sometimes have an unrealistic expectation of reality. By pointing fingers and criticising these people are probably fulfilling some intrinsic primeval need of living a grandiose and perfect life. These people are unfortunately prone to react emotionally whenever they get the opportunity and base their comments and attitude, without realising it, on their emotions and state of mind at a given time. Without thinking rationally, they would send a message and even provide the “evidence” by means of photos of their perception of what is happening at the school. No school is perfect but I appeal to these people to celebrate the positive at a given time, refrain form reacting emotionally and find reasons to be grateful for all the wonderful opportunities provided at our school for our boys.
