Die kwartaal is volstoom aan die gang en die afgelope week is gekenmerk deur groot opwinding. Elke dag by Grey-Kollege is gevul met verskeie aktiwiteite wat plaasvind en verskeie verwagtinge waaraan voldoen moet word. Hierdie verwagtinge is die afgelope week weereens onder die vergrootglas geplaas deurdat die skool die kwartaallikse oueraand aangebied het, deur die voorbereiding vir die jaarlikse musiekfees wat in volle swang is asook deur die besoek van Maritzburg College, 'n tradisionele seunskool, wat die voorlaaste interskole vir 2014 ingelui het. Soos wat 'n mens kan aflei, moes daar die afgelope week aan verskillende belangegroepe se verwagtinge voldoen word: tydens die oueraand is die akademie skerp in perspektief geplaas, met die inoefening vir die jaarlikse musiekfees word daar aan die kulturele behoeftes van die skool gehoor gegee en met die afgelope naweek se interskole-geleentheid het die fokus hoofsaaklik na die sportterrein verskuif. Binne in hierdie drukgang van verwagtinge bevind die seuns, personeel, ouers, Oud-Greys en selfs die breër Grey-gemeenskap hulself waar almal sekere aansprake en eise aan die sleutelbelanghebbendes by die skool stel.

 

The question must then surely be posed where does the parameters and boundaries of these stakeholders lie? Also, what are the expectations and rights of all of these stakeholder groups here at school? The rights of the individual are at the forefront nowadays and people are very quick to defend these rights. However, the rights of people can often be compared to a two-sided coin where the rights of a group have a direct impact and are often directly related to the rights of others. Two of the primary stakeholder groups here at school are the boys and staff. The boys most definitely have the right to a sound Grey College education where the primary focus lies on a sound academic education. Boys, therefore, must have the opportunity to excel academically within a sound school system where they can attend uninterrupted academic classes, from a Monday until a Friday, and during which the educators will provide them with a sound academic education based on the various syllabi and regulations that are prescribed. Disruptions to this academic programme should be avoided and the school has the responsibility to set the climate for academic excellence. Staff members, on the other hand, must support the academic ethos and must be provided with the necessary academic teaching time, free of interruptions, from a Monday until a Friday, so that they can provide the boys with the necessary opportunities to become the masters of the academic material on offer.

 

Dit bring my by die rol van die ouers. Ouers moet, in samewerking met die personeel en die skool, in 'n vertrouensverhouding saamwerk waar die akdemiese belange van die seuns voorkeur moet geniet. Dit beteken dat ouers wel die reg het om in gesprek met die personeel en die skool oor hul seun se akademiese vordering te tree, soos tydens die afgelope week se oueraand, maar dat die integriteit van 'n skool se personeel bo verdenking moet bly. Hierdie integriteit kan net bo verdenking wees indien die bona fides van die personeel nie bevraagteken word nie. Nie net sluit dit die akademiese bona fides van die personeel in nie maar ook die bona fides wanneer dit by spankeuses en seleksie kom. Ouers het nie die reg om naamlose briewe waarin aantygings gemaak word aan die skool te stuur nie aangesien dit hierdie vertrouensverhouding, waarin wedesydse respek 'n groot rol speel, onherroeplik kan beinvloed. Om oor die braaivleisvure of langs die sportvelde die skool te bespreek en te kritiseer, grens aan die skryf van naamlose briewe of die stuur van e-posse sonder verwysings en veroorsaak net ongelukkigheid aangesien daar emosioneel oor sekere sake en situasies gereageer word.

 

Grey College is a unique educational institution because it prepares boys for life by providing them with a holistic education. The headmaster, staff, school captains and prefects have all been appointed in positions of authority, so that they can cooperate and by working together provide opportunities for boys to develop as well-rounded human-beings. Effective communication plays an important part in this process so that misunderstandings can be avoided and that the school's ethos ,mission, values and ultimate vision can be fulfilled. All the stakeholders need to respect the parameters and boundaries of these entities so that every boy can develop to his full potential. There is a fine balance in this school system that must be protected at all costs. It is, therefore, imperative that all the stakeholders work together to keep this balance so that the selfish needs of a particular stakeholder group do not disturb this fine balance. Grey College had flourished for 159 years because of this balance and I trust that all the stakeholders will take cognisance of this in 2014.

 

Ons lewe in interessante tye en die volgende week beloof om 'n week van groot opwinding te wees met die besoek van Paul Roos Gimnasium en met die afsluiting van die winter sportseisoen.
