Grey's new generation 29 January 2017 08:01

With the month of January nearing its end, the past week was another eventful one here at Grey College. On Tuesday, the annual inter-house athletics championships took place and it was a wonderful opportunity for the school to get together and to enjoy this traditional occasion. Although the weather did not initially play along, the boys were not deterred by this and all involved enjoyed the event in its revised format. This was the second year during which the championships started in the afternoon and finished under lights in the evening. The mixed relay races, which included athletes from our sister schools, Eunice and Oranje Hoër Meisieskool, added to the excitement of the evening. Although the athletics connoisseurs might not agree with the idea of mass participation in certain events, this was nevertheless a good opportunity for the school to unite and to also have fun whilst the serious athletes were provided with ample opportunities to display their talent.

On Friday during assembly our grade 8 boys had their annual induction ceremony and this turned out to be a special occasion. I, once again, shared the symbolic meaning of the Grey College blazer with all the boys present in assembly. The blue in the blazer represents unity and my message was that although we are all different at the school in our views and backgrounds, we have the opportunity to be united by wearing this special blazer. The gold in the blazer represents our rich heritage and traditions over more than 160 years whilst the white symbolises tolerance. It is important that we respect and celebrate our differences at school and the symbolic meaning of the Grey College blazer was, once again, a reminder of the school’s role in modern South African society. The motto of the school, namely ’Stabilis’, is a reminder that we need to be steadfast in our behaviour, mindset and attitude so that we will never bring the good name of the school in disrepute.

Grey College is an educational institution with a proud history of preparing our boys for the challenges in a modern South Africa. Boys need to feel that they belong here at school and although from different cultural backgrounds, the school must be inclusive in its approach to others. Grey College, as an educational institution, also implies that boys will be educated beyond the curricula and that they will also be shown and educated on how to develop sensitivity and tolerance towards those who might be different to them. In this lies the uniqueness of a Grey College education: whether a boy takes off his tie or even go on a hunger strike, as had happened in years gone by, to get the attention of the school leaders, we have always been able to resolve our differences and to be united by wearing the Grey College blazer. This remains the philosophy and approach of the school and its leaders and management.
