Making a difference 28 February 2016 09:02

"A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops."

It was a privilege to also welcome back the Korkie children, Pieter-Ben and Lize-Marie, now aged 19 and 17, to this special occasion, and many other special guests who attended, and Yolande paid tribute to all the people who played important roles in their lives during their ordeal in Yemen. In total, Pierre was held hostage for 558 days whilst Yolande spent 228 days in captivity. A special tree will be planted during the year at school, and close to the late Pierre Korkie's classroom, in his honour and to celebrate his example, life and influence at Grey College. The book "558 Days" is available from Christian Art Publishers but will also be stocked at the Reunion office on campus and can be ordered on-line.

It was also a special occasion on Wednesday evening when the 2016 hockey season was officially launched here at school. What makes the 2016 hockey season so special, is that the first hockey team will not be sponsored by any company this season but will be playing for Child Welfare and Child Line, Free State, therefore, not taking something from the community but rather giving something back. The logo of Child Welfare will also be prominently displayed on the first hockey team's shirt this season as well as on the scoreboard at the main astro field here at school. This concept is, as far as I am aware, a first in South African schools and through the "cash for goals" initiative companies and individual sponsors will be able to sponsor goals of the first hockey team raising money in the process for these charity organisations. At all home games a pledge area will be provided where individuals and companies can pledge an amount on every goal that the first hockey team will be scoring during the match providing the boys and the school with the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those who are less-priviliged through their God-given talents.

It was wonderful to welcome representatives of Vodacom, one of the school's main sponsors, back to school and to assembly on Thursday afternoon. Vodacom has been one of the school's main partners for several years and we enjoy a very special partnership and relationship with Vodacom. During the assembly, Vodacom activated data bundles for all of the boys and our school captains were also priviliged to receive special data bundles from Vodacom for the remainder of the year. It certainly was a festive atmosphere and we are all looking forward to a continued partnership that will be mutually rewarding for all concerned in the future!

Our first cricket team will play in the regional Knights T20-final this coming Friday in Kimberley against Noorkaap Hoërskool after beating St. Andrews convincingly by 9 wickets in the Free State final this week. There was a lot of emotion involved in this match and our first cricket team did the school proud by rising to the occasion. We wish them well this coming Friday and please support our boys in Kimberley, if possible.
