Yster slyp yster 8 August 2016 16:08

Die afgelope twee weke was ‘n besige tyd by Grey Kollege gewees.

During our school assembly on the Wednesday and prior to the inter-schools weekend in Port Elizabeth, we welcomed Old Grey Dennis du Plessis back to his alma mater to address the school and staff. Dennis matriculated in 1997 and was also both the school- and first rugby team captain during his final year at Grey College.  Not only did he represent the Craven Week team that year but he was also selected for the SA Schools’ side. However, he suffered a serious injury which prevented him from being capped for the SA Schools’ side that year. Dennis went on to do a post-matric year in 1998 at Michaelhouse in the Natal Midlands and was also selected for the KwaZulu-Natal Craven Week rugby side that year.

In many ways Dennis epitomises what a Grey gentleman is all about and he certainly did not disappoint when he addressed the boys and staff during assembly. He spoke about what he had learned during his time at school and that the Grey boys have always had the ability to unite and forge one another to bring out the best in each individual at school. He mentioned how the first rugby team of 1997 was not riddled with stars but that they decided before every practice that year that they would give their all for their fellow players. This was also then one of the main ingredients of the success story of the 1997 first rugby team.

This past weekend I was privileged to travel to Stellenbosch to support the choir in the ‘ATKV Applous’ finals. The choir did the school proud and ended third in their category with 82.5% and a gold certificate. A word of thanks must be extended to Mr. Davel and Mr. Cilliers for all their time and effort and also for the staff who accompanied them this past weekend. The Grey boys also flew the flag this past weekend during the SA Schools’ golf tournament in the Eastern Cape, by doing well in a soccer tournament in Johannesburg as well as winning the Under 15 tennis tournament at Affies, Pretoria, beating Paul Roos Gymnasium in the final. Once again, thanks to the staff members who accompanied the boys as well as the parents who supported the school.
