The class of 2015 legacy 17 January 2016 12:01

The 2016 school year started off with a lot of excitement and the usual hype during the past week. There was a lot of excitement when both the boys and staff returned to Grey College for the start of another exciting year filled with many opportunities. With the start of the year, we also received some wonderful rain on Monday evening when we welcomed back the new intake of boys and parents to Grey College. It is custom in certain cultures to perceive rain as a sign of blessing at special events and I trust that Grey College, and all of the school's stakeholders, will enjoy a blessed 2016.

When the occasion demands it, the Grey boy always comes up to scratch."

It was a privilege to welcome the majority of our top academic achievers of 2015 back to assembly during the past Friday. These boys, who all achieved an average of 80% during the NSC- examinations, received a special certificate and a medal from the school in recognition of their wonderful achievements. Each boy who attended the assembly, had the opportunity to address both the boys and staff and to share the secret of their academic success with those present. What was pleasing to notice, was that the majority of the boys thanked the school, and the staff in particular, for their academic achievements. Being schooled in a culture of excellence has enabled them to raise the bar and to achieve their wonderful results. The following boys must be congratulated on some exceptional achievements during the past NSC-examinations:

  • Matthew Barnard: 8 distinctions
  • Jan-Paul Berry: 7 distinctions
  • Hanno Bezuidenhoudt: 7 distinctions
  • Heimar Christ: 7 distinctions
  • Johan Griesel: 7 distinctions
  • Luan Nel: 7 distinctions
  • Boyd Oosthuizen: 6 distinctions
  • Louis Schoonwinkel : 6 distinctions
  • Christian Acho: 5 distinctions
  • Ruben Fraser: 5 distinctions
  • Wayne Maskell: 5 distinctions
  • Constant Nel: 5 distinctions
  • Willem Strydom: 5 distinctions
  • Johann van Deventer: 5 distinctions
  • Adriaan Vorster: 5 distinctions
  • Ye-yang Xu: 5 distinctions

What is promising for the school, is that the 2015 grade 10- and grade 11 classes also achieved a 100% pass rate which certainly bodes well for the future.

"Grey is not about whether you are good at academics or not. Grey is not about whether you are good at culture or not. Grey is not about whether you are good at sport or not, or even if the Rugby team has won or not.

Grey is about tradition. Tradition that embraces and does not shun. It is that tradition that will hold my son in the palm of your hands, two fingers outstretched and two fingers folded back. The reason I send my son to Grey is to experience that and along the way, maybe his academics, culture and sport might be bootstrapped."
