Grey reaching out 7 September 2014 09:09

During the past two weeks the school focused on its social responsibility towards the local community and reached out towards various individuals and organisations through various projects. During this year's music festival the school not only invited some of Bloemfontein's senior citizens from various retirement villages for a light supper prior to the show on the Thursday evening's dress rehearsal but also invited individuals who are less privileged in terms of their mental capacity from the Free State Residential Care Centre. The Thursday evening show was a wonderful occasion and it was a privilege to let these members of our community experience the joy of and share in the 2014 Grey College FNB music festival.

So last Friday I took up the "Ice Bucket Challenge" in front of the Old Bell at school but what is more important to me is that money is also raised and donated towards one of these worthy causes. I am, therefore, very pleased to say that Grey College donated R1000.00 towards the J9 Foundation and the school also challenged our traditional rivals namely Selborne College (East-Londen), Grey High School (Port Elizabeth), Paul Roos Gymnasium (Stellenbosch), Paarl Boys High (Paarl), Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool (Pretoria), Glenwood High School (Durban) as well as Maritzburg College (Pietermaritzburg) to also donate a R1000.00 towards the J9 Foundation. I would, however, like to extend this challenge to some of the local schools here in Bloemfontein namely Sentraal Hoërskool, Eunice Secondary as well as Oranje Meisieskool.

During assembly on the Friday before the Paul Roos inter-schools weekend two Old Greys, namely Ollie le Roux and Ian Grobler, visited the school and addressed the boys. Ian Grobler's message was that the Grey boys must develop a siege mentality and that this is not only applicable to hockey, where one must always take control of the channel in front of one, but also to life. With the mini examinations, for the grade 8-11 boys at hand, and the grade 12's who have already started with their Trial Examinations, this message is also applicable to the academic opportunities on offer here at school. Ollie le Roux spoke about maintaining high standards here at Grey College and that one must never compromise. Once again, this message can be applied to the academic opportunities that are now a reality with the term nearing its end.
