Grey courage and commitment 23 August 2015 17:08

During the past Monday’s assembly the school had the privilege to welcome a true inspiration into our midst. Mr. Ahmed Kathrada visited Grey College and both the staff and boys were fascinated and held spellbound by his humble approach and dignified demeanour. Mr Kathrada, who was a political prisoner for 18 years on Robben island during the early 60’s, with the late Mr . Nelson Mandela, answered questions from the boys about his time in prison and the political climate in South Africa during the Rivonia trial. An interesting fact is that Old-Grey Bram Fischer was the lawyer at the time who defended the political activists during the Rivonia trial. Mr. Kathrada also shared with the school that the Indian inmates were given long trousers to wear whilst the Black inmates only short trousers. The reason for this was to divide the inmates whilst on Robben island and to spread dissension amongst their ranks.

Mr . Kathrada took some photographs with some of the boys afterwards and was very impressed by the spirit of the Grey boys especially when they honoured him with the school’s War Cry. Our lives are certainly not determined by how powerful and popular we are - the words of Martin Luther King junior ring true: "There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right." These words definitely rings true of Mr. Kathrada.

The final weekend of the winter sports season took place in Stellenbosch this past weekend and although the home side used the local conditions to their advantage the Grey boys nevertheless showed some true courage and passion during all of the activities. On several occasions during the weekend parents from Paul Roos Gymnasium commented on the gentlemanly conduct and behaviour of the Grey boys and although some of the results did not go our way, the school and Grey community can still be proud of the boys’ effort and determination. The role of a school like Grey College today is to prepare boys for life by giving them the moral fibre and life skills to make a difference and when one looks at the overall display, passion and commitment of our boys, the school is certainly educating them and providing them with these skills as well as a sense of belonging to something bigger.

We are looking forward to another exciting week with the music festival next weekend!
