Grey reaches out 29 May 2016 09:05

The extra-mural programme of the school came to a fitting end this past Monday by welcoming the most successful international golfer of all time, and a living South African legend, Gary Player, to the heart of the school, Grey College's Reünie Hall, for a special school assembly. Gary Player's achievements and accolades are too many to mention in detail but include, amongst others, being named the South African Sportsman of the Century in 2000; being the only modern golfer to win the prestigious British Open in three different decades; being inducted already in 1974 into the World Golf Hall of Fame and being awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Law from the University of St. Andrews in 1995. However, all these achievements and accolades are certainly not what have impressed me when I met Gary Player - also not the fact that he has won 165 tournaments world wide over five decades - but the presence, humility, enthusiasm and dignity of the man that is Gary Player.

During assembly Gary Player shared his life-story with the boys and told them how he had to cope with the death of his mother at the tender age of eight. He had to prepare his own food and iron his clothes for school due to the fact that his father often had to work nightshifts on a mine in Johannesburg. Although he grew up in poverty, his personal circumstances only encouraged him to work harder and to make a success of his life. His message was that how one reacts to life and one's circumstances is a choice and that one can choose whether to be positive about what happens to one or choose to remain a victim of these circumstances. He shared with the Grey boys how priviliged they are: they form part of only 1% of young people world wide who are fortunate enough to enjoy a superb education and have regular food and running water on a daily basis. He, furthermore, shared with the Grey boys that having to change is the price of survival but that being respectful to one's elders and teachers is the foundation to grow and become a successful human-being.

We have now entered the very important final stage of the second term with the examinations that have started. I trust that the Grey boys will also rise to this challenge and use this opportunity to show their academic mettle.
