Grey't Bash 10 September 2016 11:09

During the last assembly of the term, and before the onset of the examinations, we were privileged to welcome Old-Grey Boeta Dippenaar back to his alma mater. Boeta is a former Protea cricketer who represented the national team in both test matches as well as ODI’s. However, more important is the fine gentleman and wonderful ambassador of Grey College that he has developed into. Boeta visited the school at the official start of the summer sports season and his visit coincided with the launch of the inaugural ‘Grey’t Bash’ T15 cricket tournament at school.

This message that everyone is not equal was once again emphasised during the ‘Grey’t Bash’ T15 cricket tournament the previous weekend. During an auction evening a fortnight ago 72 of the school’s leading cricketers were auctioned off as part of this wonderful and exciting concept. Six companies bought the naming rights of the teams and each team was made up of both junior and senior players. During the previous weekend, these teams played in especially branded clothing to go with the company logos. Games were contested as 15-overs-per-side matches and different playing conditions were introduced to add to the excitement: bowlers were limited to 6 meter run-ups, batsmen had to retire when they reached 30 runs but were allowed back on the field after 3 wickets have gone down whilst only two bowlers were allowed to complete their allotted overs. The ‘Momentum Multiply Zone’ also added to the excitement of the tournament and meant that batsmen could double their runs if they hit the ball into that area.

The examinations are now at hand and I trust that the Grey boys will also rise to the occasion during this very important part of the term. Parents are once again reminded that school attendance of their sons is their responsibility and that parents sometimes need to make decisions that might not be perceived as popular ones.
