Dít is Grey 26 March 2017 10:03

We were also privileged to welcome ‘Oom’ Charl Marais back to his alma mater during assembly to do open this occasion with scripture reading and prayer and to address the boys during assembly. What really made ‘Oom’ Charl’s visit so special, was not only that he is a staunch Old Grey who matriculated in 1962, and a former prefect of the school, but that he spoke to the boys in fluent Sotho, Afrikaans and perhaps to a lesser extent, English. ‘Oom’ Charl grew up on a farm and shared some of his experiences at school with the boys and staff present. He mentioned to the boys that it is a wonderful privilege to attend an educational institution like Grey College and that if one uses this opportunity wisely it can certainly give one a head start in life.

However, a boy needs to always live the values of the school and act as a ‘Grey gentleman’ in life and learn to get along with those whom you rub shoulders with whilst at school. He furthermore mentioned that a young person must be firmly rooted in his faith, like a tree standing by the water side, and that this sound foundation will provide you with the necessary strength of character to face life’s challenges. He certainly provided some food for thought and one was again reminded that the five years spent at an educational institution like Grey College is a very important formative phase in a boy’s life and that one should grasp every opportunity to develop and grow as a person.

This panel discussion was ably led by Mr. Ludwig Koekemoer and the panel at times had the boys and staff in stitches with their sense of humour and sharp answers to some very interesting questions. Our guests were, for example, asked to compare playing for the Springbok side to having an unbeaten rugby season at Grey College and also to draw a comparison between winning the Currie Cup and playing for the first rugby team. All of these well-known personalities agreed that it is indeed a privilege and an honour to don the famous blue jersey of the first rugby team and that those memories are indeed treasured and very special.

I am sure all parents are looking forward to the holidays as we approach the end of an eventful first term. Our boys will be flying the Grey flag during various festivals and tournaments this Easter holiday and I encourage parents and the Grey community to support our boys.
