Commitment to Grey 1 March 2015 12:03

The past week has seen a definite change in the seasons with autumn approaching and with this change also the conclusion of most of the major summer sports here at Grey College. It has been a very successful first term for the school with some wonderful achievements. Last weekend the first cricket team participated in the T20 national finals in Stellenbosch and did the school proud. The team played a very exciting brand of cricket and ended the tournament in third place losing out on a place in the final by a mere bonus point. Our swimming team also held their own during the prestigious inter-high gala and not only did they win every trophy on offer in the boys age groups but the team was also crowned the winner of the gala in the boys section.

Not every boy at Grey College has the opportunity to represent the school at the highest level but it is important for every boy to use every opportunity to achieve to his best potential here at school. There was an incident during the heats of the inter-high gala during which some of the Grey boys decided that they will merely take part in a heat without doing their utmost best for the school. Not only did this type of behaviour bring the good name of the school in disrepute but it was also not in the spirit of what many of past generations of Grey boys stood for. Whenever a boy has the opportunity to represent the school the expectation is that he will go out of his way to achieve to the best of his ability. I can still clearly remember how Eugene Honey took part in the 800m athletics finals at inter-high in the early 80's and although he was not expected to win the race did so by showing sheer Grey guts and determination. Eugene was not expected to win the race but when he put on his Grey athletics vest that Friday evening he achieved the almost impossible. Eugene never became a top athlete after school and I am sure that he will agree that he was not the most talented athlete but what left an indelible impression on me that night was that he decided to use the opportunity that presented itself that evening to perform for Grey College. He surely did that in an admirable way that evening.

The only way to make life hard for young people is to make it soft for them."

The winter sports season will be in full swing this coming week with the respective trial matches that will be taking place for the respective winter sporting codes. A letter was sent out this past week with my weekly e-mail to all under 14 rugby parents but this letter and the philosophy of Grey College regarding sport is also applicable to every Grey parent. It is recommended that every Grey parent will read this letter which is also available on the school's website.
