Grey gold 21 August 2016 11:08

The past week was an eventful one in the history of Grey College and started just after 02:00 on Monday morning with the 400m event at the Olympic Games in Rio. Wayde van Niekerk, who matriculated in 2011, won the gold medal and set a new world record in the process. During our traditional assembly on Monday morning there was a buzz of excitement amongst both the boys and staff about this fantastic achievement. The Grey boys designed two banners in honour of Wayde which was put up in the Reünie Hall and a clip of this world breaking event was again shown to all present. It was wonderful to experience the excitement of the boys in assembly: they cheered Wayde on, as if it was a live broadcast, and broke into spontaneous song after the race was completed. The chants of “Wayde is our hero, he shall not be moved” brought goose bumps and is something that will be remembered by all present for a very long time.

We welcomed Theuns Stofberg, Old Grey and former Springbok rugby captain, as well as Bakkies Botha and Old Grey Helgard Muller, both former Springbok rugby players, to the school as the special guests for a Men’s Evening to raise funds for rugby development on Thursday evening. I was again astounded by the support of the Grey community and how they are willing to go the extra mile despite a tough economic climate for the school. I was also impressed by the three guests’ humble nature and that their message to all present was generally that they had been fortunate to make a career out of rugby and that the friendships and camaraderie that were forged during their careers are really what the sport is all about.

This coming weekend is our annual music festival and this is a very special occasion for the Grey community. We are looking forward to celebrate the cultural and musical diversity present at Grey College.
