Die Grey-barometer 24 May 2015 10:05

I had an interesting conversation with a current parent and Old-Grey this past week. The parent expressed his concern about the general well-being and state of Grey College particularly in the light of some incidents of serious ill-discipline shown by some of our senior boys during the past week. On two separate occasions during the past week some of our senior boys were guilty of transgressing the school's code of conduct by being dishonest in acquiring a question paper in a particular subject whilst a different group of senior boys was also guilty of showing a serious lack of respect towards a staff member on social media. I had to remind this parent that a high profile grade 11 boy was also found guilty of dishonesty in the early 1980's during a November examination. This boy, who was appointed as the deputy school captain for the following year, was immediately relieved of his duties as the deputy school captain and although he never reached the same heights at school with regards to leadership appointments he reached unparalleled heights on the sports fields of South Africa and remained an outstanding ambassador for Grey College.

Education today is a partnership between all of the stakeholders involved, namely the school, parents, boys and wider community. However, it is unfortunate that parents have, in many instances but not necessarily referring to the above-mentioned incidents, abdicated this responsibility. It is sad to see that parents will allow boys to make certain decisions, like for example withdrawing from teams on the Friday prior to the Saturday's fixtures, merely for the sake of their own comfort. Surely a parent must question his son's commitment not only towards the school but to life, in general, when he arrives home with the news that he has withdrawn from a team and will not be representing his school the Saturday on the sports field? I also wonder what the reaction from a parent is when a senior boy arrives home with the news that he has lost his prefect appointment at school due to ill-discipline and by not setting the expected example? Will a parent sit this boy down and voice his disappointment so that the boy can actually learn something from the situation or will the school have to bear the brunt for being unreasonable, unfair and dogmatic in its approach?
