On Tuesday evening the school hosted the annual prize giving function during which especially the grade 12 boys received the necessary recognition for their achievements during the past year. The annual prize giving ceremony is always a special occasion and an opportunity to not only reflect on the successes of the year but to also celebrate a multitude of achievements at Grey College. During this occasion the school acknowledges both the achievements and contributions made by the boys to the school - receiving this acknowledgement in the form of school colours or awards is, therefore, not a boy’s right but rather a privilege and an act of goodwill from the school. A boy is, therefore, never entitled to any of these awards or accolades. The fact that there are parents at the school who demand explanations why their son did not receive a particular award is, therefore, in the light of the spirit of the prize giving function really disappointing. One wonders then if this sense of entitlement is not, in many ways, symptomatic of the state of our society today where the emphasis is on self-gratification and an egotistic approach to matters?

How refreshing was it not to speak to the parents of the Franklin Dux medal winner, as well as some other parents whose sons did not necessarily receive some of the highest awards, after the prize giving function. These parents all had one thing in common: they humbly acknowledged the role that the school played in shaping their sons and could only thank the school and staff for their role in their sons’ successes. To these parents it was not a right for their son to attend Grey College but a privilege. Not only did this approach provide food for thought but it was a distinct contrast to those parents who will, and based on their attitude regarding the awarding of prizes and awards, possibly walk away from the school embittered thinking that the school owed them and their sons something. The adage that one should never ask what Grey College can do for you, but rather what you can do for Grey College comes to mind.

We are now fast approaching the final examinations of the year and it is now the time to pull out all the stops. I wish our gade 12 boys, in particular, well for the coming NSC- examinations that will be starting this week already. I trust that they will achieve to their full potential and meet all of the expectations.
