The Grey movement 30 January 2016 15:01

A number of highlights on the school calendar at Grey College took place during the past week with the swimming gala, athletics day as well as the induction ceremony of the grade 8's, to mention but a few. The swimming gala was, once again, a highlight not only amongst the hostel- and city boys here at school but it also created the usual excitement amongst the sister schools in Bloemfontein that attended the occasion. During a well-organised event the Grey boys must be congratulated on their impeccable behaviour and wonderful spirit displayed. The traditional "optogte" were done in good taste and some wonderful performances were also witnessed in the swimming pool. The city boys must not only be congratulated with their stylish and tasteful "optog" this year but also for winning the gala, something that has become customary during the past number of years.

Grey College is a school where one is exposed to many opportunities and where the responsibility lies on the individual, with the guidance and wisdom of the school but especially the parents, to make the most of these opportunities. It is, therefore, always sad and disappointing to notice the absence of some of our boys when it comes to these kind of events, as described. Surely, a parent should not only encourage his son to attend and support major events at school but also ensure that his son is fully- integrated in the movement and way of life that is Grey College. Unfortunately, standing on the proverbial side-line has too readily been accepted and has become the norm in modern day society. It is, after all, easier to rather be passive, be a part of the faceless masses and criticise from a distance especially when one can remain anonymous.

This coming Tuesday we are celebrating the 2015 academic successes at the school during the annual academic prize giving ceremony. Parents are encouraged to attend this special function and to pay tribute to those who have excelled during the 2015 academic year.
