Grey starts 2017 18 January 2017 09:01

The 2017 academic school year started this past week at Grey College and it was a special occasion to welcome the new generation of boys and parents on Monday evening in the heart of the school, the Reünie Hall. Grey College is a special educational institution with, among others, impressive facilities - however, these facilities are certainly not the same without the buzz and excitement of a new generation of boys who are given the opportunity to walk on this hallowed campus and school grounds. During this special gathering the new boys and parents were not only introduced to the school’s vision, mission statement and values but also to an able and enthusiastic staff. What is, however, imperative is that an organisation’s vision, mission statement and values become part of the ‘walk and talk’ of the stakeholders associated with the organisation and that these wonderful ideals are not merely there to provide a warm and fuzzy feeling whilst perused. All of these stakeholders must become true Grey College brand ambassadors.

The school is also extremely proud of the efforts and results of our grade 12 group during the 2016 NSC examinations. Of the 222 boys who wrote these examinations, a pass rate of 97.75% as well as a matric exemption of 80.18% were achieved. However, what is really impressive is how our top achievers performed during this examination: 338 subject distinctions were achieved, the most since 2013, whilst 31 of our boys also achieved an average of 80% or more. Six of these boys ranked in the top 50 in the province. Daniël Claassen who achieved an average of 94.86% not only came second overall in the Free State but also received the subject prize for Afrikaans Home Language in the province. These boys were welcomed to our assembly this past Friday to receive a special certificate and medal for their accomplishments. During this occasion, these boys were given the opportunity to share the secret of their success with the boys and they were unanimous in recognising the role that their Creator, the school and staff played in their recent success. A bright future beckons for these boys and we will follow their progress closely.

It was a solemn occasion this past Saturday when the Grey College community bade farewell to Old Grey Dr. Werner van Pletzen who tragically passed away during the past week. He will be remembered for his infectious laugh and kindness towards others and our thoughts and prayers are with his son, Werries, who are currently in grade 8, and his family. The message of Prof. Laetus Lategan, Old Grey, during the start of the year church service was that we do not know what lies ahead but that we can always walk in the comfort and knowledge that God is in control of our lives. I am sure that this message will also comfort the Van Pletzen family during the difficult time ahead.

I trust that you will all enjoy a wonderful and exciting year!
